In the homeland (North China and Korea) grows as a deciduous shrub or large tree, can grow up to 20m in height. With wide rounded crown. Fast growing. Hardiness zone 5. The bark is smooth, gray, similar to beech bark. Leaves 15-44cm long, glossy, dark green. Flowering time is long, from about June to August. The flower heads are about 3.5-19 cm long. The bee tree is a dicotyledonous plant. Flowers white to pale brownish, fragrant, 3-5mm large. The fruits ripen from August to November. The round, black seeds are about 2-4mm in size. Good nectar plant, in autumn the seeds are useful for bird food. Grows in well-drained, calcareous soils. Does not tolerate excess moisture. Planted in a sunny to slightly shaded place. It is an attractive tree with glossy leaves, long and late flowering. Bee tree seeds are used for food in the homeland and oil is obtained from them. Fruit and seed heads are ideal for floristics.
