In the wild grows in China and Japan, where it has long been cultivated as a fruit crop. Large-fruited varieties have been developed. Up to 4 m tall shrub or tree. Shoots yellowish-brown, prickly, partly covered with silvery star-like hairs. Leaves leathery, elliptical or ovate. The new leaves are silvery on both sides, later - only on the underside. The flowers are funnel-shaped, fragrant, yellowish-white on the outside, yellow on the inside, about 1.2 cm long. Fruit juicy, spherical or ovoid, up to 0.8 cm in diameter, red, sweet and sour. In Latvia it blooms in May, June, the fruit ripens in September. Freezes in harsher winters, but grows well.
