In the wild grows in western North America, from British Columbia to Northern California. 0.6 -1 m tall shrub, leaves composed of 5-9 leaves, dark green on the surface, shiny, pale green on the underside, leathery, ovoid to elliptical, 4-8 cm long, often pink in autumn and winter. Flowers yellow, fruits are blue-black berry. Blooms in May, fruits ripen in September, October. Evergreen shrubs. Planted in sandy or light clay soils with sufficient moisture, partly shaded place, because it often burns in the spring (therefore it must be covered), moderately fast-growing, resistant to diseases and pests.
