Catawba Rosebay Or Rhododendron /Rhododendron Catawbiense/
Evergreen, 2-4 m tall shrub with a width exceeding the height. New shoots initially tubular, later bare. Leaves elliptical, rounded at both ends, 7-15 cm long, 3-5 cm wide. Dark green, bare on the top, bluish green on the bottom. Flowers purple, with greenish or orange spots on the upper petal inside the flower, 6 cm in diameter, broad funnel-shaped to bell-shaped, with broad, round petals. Flowers in 15-20 dense clusters. Blooms in late May, early June. Completely winter-hardy rhododendron in Latvia. Due to its high decorativeness, modesty and good winter hardiness, it is widely used.
